Cultivating Humility

Posted: January 30, 2010 in Uncategorized

Today I read the book “Humility” by C.J. Mahaney.  I had read parts of it a couple years ago and knew at some point I needed to work through the whole book.  Consider that done.

The number of helpful insights are too many to list.  I suggest picking up the book and reading it.  I think requiring it for first year seminary students is a good idea (and then making it a mandatory read at the start of every year)!  Maybe reciting the contents before you can graduate would be helpful as well.  Anyway…here are the strategies that C.J. lays out for weakening pride in our lives:

1.  Reflect on the wonder of the cross.

2.  Acknowledge your dependence upon and need for God each day when you awake.

3.  Begin your day expressing gratefulness to God.

4.  Practice the Spiritual Disciplines.

5.  Seize your commute time.

6.  Cast your cares upon Him.

7.  At the end of the day, transfer the glory to God.

8.  Receive the gift of sleep from God and acknowledge His purpose for it.

9.  Study–the attributes of God, the doctrines of grace, and the doctrine of sin.

10.  Play Golf often.

11.  Laugh often.

12.  Look for evidences of  grace in others.

13.  Encourage and serve others.

14.  Invite and PURSUE correction.

15.  Respond humbly to trials.

Lord, help me crucify pride and embrace humility.  I do not wish to be prideful and stand in opposition to you.
