Democrats Political Move–“Deem and Pass” Health Care

Posted: March 18, 2010 in Uncategorized

I don’t understand politics all that well.  I am thoroughly enjoying Dr. Chad Brand and his class “Religion in the Public Square.”  I am also currently reading Richard Land’s “The Divided States of America” and keeping a working notebook of what is going on in the political world.  It is an eye-opening exercise.

The Democrats, led by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, are seeking to push the health care bill through using a procedural move called “Deem and Pass.”  This point of procedure will have the House vote on a “fix it measure” that makes changes to the Senate health care bill while automatically passing the Senate bill without actually voting on it.  This supposedly will “protect” lawmakers from casting a vote for a controversial bill.

From the outside, this looks like sleight of hand.  A move that, from my perspective, simply subverts the legislative process.  The American people elect representatives so that they can represent the will of their constituents.  If these elected officials are not given the chance to vote then it seems like the democratic process becomes meaningless.  The American people, having elected those they wish to represent them, have been silenced.

Here is a neat little video from NewsWeek.
