T. D. Jakes, Modalism, James MacDonald, and the Rest of the Mess

Posted: September 29, 2011 in Uncategorized

Anyway you slice it, playing with modalistic ideas is bad news.  The God of the Bible exists as a Trinity.  He is one God existing in three persons.  Any view of God that denies this is heretical and to be condemned as unChristian.  The God of the Bible will not be explained in any way that contradicts the way He has revealed Himself in Scripture.

Is T. D. Jakes a Modalist?  Many say yes, some say no, and others are uncertain.  I find the use of the term “manifestations” (see the link and the explanation of who God is) in his attempt to explain God’s nature to be extremely disconcerting, unhelpful, and possibly heretical (depending on how he defines this term).  So, it will be interesting to hear him questioned by Mark Driscoll in the upcoming Elephant Room discussions.

James MacDonald has given me cause for concern as well.  He does not seem to think Jakes is a modalist, and, from the use of some of his language in a recent blog post, doesn’t seem to see this as a big deal.  Maybe he knows more than the rest of us about Jake’s view of God. I hope so.  Or, maybe MacDonald isn’t seeing things as clearly as he should.  I am already uncomfortable with MacDonald for other reasons.  This just pushes me further away from wanting to listen to what he has to say.

This article from Nathan Busenitz is really helpful and I hope widely read.

Looking forward to the conversation….

I’d be curious to hear your reservations about McDonald. I haven’t quite figured him out. And the times I hear/read him, I really like some of it and others parts…not so much.
