Union With Christ–John Calvin and John Murray

Posted: November 6, 2013 in Uncategorized

union_yesHow important is our union with Christ? John Calvin, the great reformation theologian, and John Murray, former professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, both think this is a massive theological point.

John Calvin would write, “We must understand that as long as Christ remains outside of us, and we are separated from him, all that he has suffered and done for the salvation of the human race remains useless and of no value to us…It is true that we obtain this by faith” (Calvin, Institutes, 3.1.1).

John Murray would later write, “Union with Christ is really the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation not only in its application but also in its once-for-all accomplishment in the finished work of Christ. Indeed the whole process of salvation has in view the realization of other phases of union with Christ” (Redemption Accomplished and Applied, 161).

This is a massive point to consider. It would be a fruitful exercise to ponder this point of Christian theology and I commend that exercise to you.
